“If the history of medicine is told through the stories of doctors, it is because their contributions stand in place of the more substantive heroism of their patients.” – Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, The Emperor of all Maladies
Health is at the core of the mission of Gateway for Cancer Research, and in these challenging times our thoughts are with all those most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. We know that too many are facing unprecedented challenges during this global pandemic, especially cancer patients who are highly vulnerable to the virus, and their doctors and caregivers who continue to support and care for them in these uncertain days.
The Gateway team remains committed to the well-being of all those we serve. To help you navigate the uncertainties of COVID-19 – including how it impacts cancer patients – we are sharing the following information that may be helpful from our valued partner Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA):
How does cancer make you more vulnerable to viruses like COVID-19? - Cancer has ways to counterattack and neutralize patients’ immune system. When that happens, a tumor may begin to grow and spread, and patients may become more vulnerable to illness.
Some lung cancer patients have a higher risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms - Some lung cancer patients face additional challenges as the novel coronavirus continues to spread.
CTCA has additional useful information about cancer and COVID-19 which you can find here.
As we face this global pandemic, Gateway and CTCA stand together in our shared commitment to the good health and well-being of cancer patients and their families.
We are exceedingly grateful for the selfless commitment of the medical and research community on the front lines in the battle to defeat COVID-19. Their courage and dedication is awe-inspiring. We stand ready to support our research partners with whatever assistance they may need.
We hope that you and your loved ones stay well and safe in the weeks and months ahead. We are steadfast in our optimism that, together, we will persevere in the face of this crisis and overcome it through the application of transformational scientific research and the power of the human spirit.
